Transport & Logistics

Your Role as a 7.5t Driver

A person licensed to drive vehicles of 7.5 tonnes or over is also known as an LGV driver, or HGV driver. For anyone who passed their test prior to 1997, the right to drive this class of vehicle is included on your standard driving license - this is often referred to as "grandfather rights", however, the younger generation of drivers need to take additional tests to drive a 7.5t vehicle. As the population ages and people with standard rights retire, there will become a shortage of drivers to fulfil these roles - so it's a great career option with long term stability. In 2017-2018, 2 Billion Tonnes of Goods were moved by 7.5t GB registered vehicles in the UK alone.

Daily Duties of a 7.5t Driver

  • Plan delivery routes and ensure that routes maximise productivity.
  • Communicate with customers/suppliers to coordinate drop-offs and pick-ups.
  • Supervising and assisting with the Loading of Goods
  • Ensure safe loading guidelines are met
  • Carry out pre and post-shift Vehicle inspections and report any maintenance issues
  • Logging hours and completing any paperwork required
  • Drivers must report any accident or issue to the client
  • To ensure customer satisfaction, drivers must interact with customers politely and address any concerns a customer may have.

Required Experience and Skills of a 7.5t Driver

To be a Swanstaff 7.5t Driver you will usually require a minimum of 6 months experience in a similar role, although some of our roles may be suitable for newly qualified drivers. You will require a current Driver CPC and usually a Digi-Tacho. Below are some of the other qualities we look for in our drivers:
  • Reliability
  • Planning
  • Problem Solving
  • Ability to work to tight schedules and deadlines
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Excellent road awareness and driving skills
  • Interpersonal skills - particularly when you are dealing directly with customers
  • Many roles require the use of hand held technology/devices so you will need to have the ability to use these with training.
