Overview

This face-to-face training course for the care sector covers both the practical and theory-based elements of First Aid and Basic Life Support. You will learn how to manage a variety of First Aid situations until professional help arrives, perform chest compressions and rescue breaths (CPR), operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) safely and how to place an unconscious breathing victim in the recovery position. These skills are vital for all health and social care professionals in their day to day routine and should form part of standard induction training in the sector.

Aims of this course

At the end of this course participants should be able to demonstrate First Aid skills to help someone who:

  •     Is unresponsive and breathing/not breathing
  •     Choking
  •     Drowning
  •     May have sustained Burns
  •     Eye Injury
  •     Has been poisoned/ taken an overdose
  •     Has a Spinal Injury
  •     Hypothermia
  •     Stroke
  •     Seizures
  •     Heart attack/Cardiac Arrest
  •     Bleeding and Shock
  •     Electric Shock
  •     Asthma attack
  •     Severe allergic reaction
  •     Diabetic emergency
  •     Broken bones
 Course Structure & Content
  •     The role of the First Aider
  •     Dispelling some myths around First Aid
  •     Assessing the Scene
  •     Primary Assessment
  •     Scenarios relevant to the Health and Social Care sector to illustrate a variety of First Aid situations and relevant responses
  •     Dealing with an unconscious/conscious casualty
  •     The recovery position
  •     Cardio-pulmonary-resuscitation (CPR) adult and child   
  •     Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  •     Responding to a choking casualty adult and child
 Practical activities
  • Role play - the choking casualty
  • Placing a casualty in the recovery position
  • 5 step Primary survey
  • Chest compressions and rescue breaths with a Resus Anne
  • Using an AED​

There will be an assessment questionnaire to be completed by all delegates at the end of the course
